THE (Starfish Singers) DESIGNER APRON
The idea behind incorporating an apron into the Starfish Singers story happened when I was watching an online video about how to match products with messages. The instructor encouraged the viewers to write down ideas about their product and create a sentence. My ideas centered around gender shifts and places of change. The kitchen was definitely one of them. A few hours later, I wrote in big bold letters: If you appreciate me in our kitchen, kiss me while I cook. There was only one product this quirky little message would match…the humble apron.
The aprons are manufactured by Freeset. Like many fair trade businesses, Freeset targets countries that are socially and economically marginalized. Human trafficking and poverty feed India’s sex trade, where women and children are forced into prostitution and face a life without choices. Freeset is a bag- and apparel-manufacturing business whose purpose is to provide these women with employment and a way out of prostitution. Freest make quality jute and organic cotton products, but their business is freedom!
